Glassworks Schönberg II (at Gugu)

Glashütte Schönberg was a forest glassworks in what is now Upper Austria, near the Bohemian border. Established in 1717 on the slopes of Mount Hengstberg by the hamlet of Schönberg, it produced glass (specific products and ownership details remain unclear in records). In 1754 the glassworks relocated to the small settlement of Gugu, where it continued operating until its closure in 1770. The isolation and later economic hardships (exacerbated perhaps by the Seven Years’ War) contributed to its decline. Little documentation survives on its output, but after 1770 the local economy shifted towards reverse glass painting (Hinterglasmalerei), for which Sandl became known.
