Glassworks in the Gernitz

The Gernitz glassworks in Mottingeramt was the first documented production site in the interior of the Gföhlerwald (operating approx. 1610–1651). Managed by tenant Tobias Zeller and scribe Simon Friderich, it produced high-quality glassware as early as the early 17th century. In 2000, its exact location at Gernitzbach (Sommerleithen field) was confirmed through archaeological finds. Discoveries included glass melt, crown glass, and refined glass with white and sealing-wax red filigree overlays. These finds prove a technically sophisticated production of utility and luxury glass, highlighting the site's regional importance beyond standard green forest glass.
