Glashütte am Glaskogel

Glaskogel near Purkersdorf preserves the memory of early glassmaking in the Vienna Woods. A land register from 1572 mentions a “Glashütten” in this area, providing important written evidence of a historical glassworks. The nearby Glasgraben is also associated in local tradition with forest-glass production. By the mid-18th century, the Theresian tax records even mention several “glassworks in Purkersdorf”, although their precise locations remain unknown. The Weber von Fürnberg family also owned property in and around Purkersdorf, while Joseph von Fürnberg was himself an important glassworks entrepreneur. Together, these sources suggest that glass production in the region may have been more extensive than the currently identifiable sites indicate.
