Glassworks at Wirts
1300 – 1316
On the wooded edge of the valley near Wirts once stood an early glassmaking site. An account published in 1898 records a Waidhofen an der Ybbs farmstead called “glashut foedum” in 1316. The name points to an older glassworks, but does not prove that its furnace was still operating at that date. Its memory survived in the later farmhouse known as “Glashütten” and in the name Glashüttenberg. In 1971, the cut of a former artificial water channel was still visible; Friedrich Almer identified it as serving the vanished glassworks. No reliable details are currently known about its founders, workforce, products or operating period.
