Stara Huta (Althütte)

1793 – 1815

The Althütte glassworks (Stara Huta) was the first German glassworks in Bukovina, founded in 1793 by German-Bohemian immigrants. It produced sheet and hollow glass and was a key economic driver in the region, employing over 100 workers. The glassworks closed around 1815 after the surrounding forest was deforested, making firewood supply too expensive. The settlement of Althütte continued to exist even after the glassworks shut down.
