Project
This interactive map shows the history of glassmaking in Austria and neighboring regions (Bohemia, Bavarian Forest, Slovenia, etc.) from 1300 to 1900.
Glashytt is a historical spelling of the German word „Glashütte“ (glassworks), as it was used in medieval documents and charters.
How to use
- Timeline: Move the sliders to select a time period. Only glassworks active during this period will be displayed.
- Markers: Click on a marker or circle to view details about the glassworks.
- Circles: Dashed circles mark locations with uncertain localization (e.g., archaeological finds).
- Lines: Connecting lines show successor relationships between glassworks.
Historical background
Austria and its neighboring regions were centers of glassmaking for centuries. The abundant wood supplies and quartz sand deposits made these areas ideal for glass production. Many glassworks were „wandering works“ – they moved on once the wood resources in the area were exhausted.
